Character Name: Sonohara Anri

Canon: Durarara!!! [Anime + Novels]

Reference: Wiki

Appearance: Picture :B

Character Info: Sonohara Anri began life as a victim of an abusive father. She developed a kind of mental withdrawal defense mechanism in order to cope with it, a trait that wasn't helped at all when her mother finally fought back one day and killed her father and then herself in front of Anri. But not before telling her that she loved her, of course!

Anri inherited the sword her mother used that day; a one-of-a-kind cursed blade possessed by some kind of entity filled with nothing but unending love for all of humanity, with one or two rare exceptions. Saika, the sword, now lives in Anri's right arm, and though she is able to exert her will upon it in order to keep it contained or to withdraw it when she wishes, she can't silence the ravings of the sword. She lives every day with it whispering, chatting, or sometimes even screaming its love for her and the world into her ear. Saika also raves about how it wants to express its love by slicing into people so that it can share its children, still more cursed blades, with the world.

Nearly any other person would succumb to the ravings of the blade, but not Anri. Because she grew up learning how to mentally withdraw from abuse and other unwanted situations, and because she's naturally an incredibly strong willed person, she has little trouble tuning Saika's ravings out and continuing with her life as she pleases. The only slip she's ever had lasted less than a second before she remembered herself and regained control of the sword.

Thanks to her childhood and living with the sword now, she's had very poor social development. She really doesn't form attachments easily, or even normally when she does manage it. She goes through life with heavy dependence on those who call her friend. She even contently clings to a girl who was using her to make herself look better in comparison and was satisfied with it! To her it was a fair exchange for the companionship she got in return. That sense of fair trade extends to even more than that; she once saves a teacher she detests from being attacked not because it was the right thing to do, but because she felt it was fair since he helped her be placed into a class with a good friend of hers.

Anri isn't a person who makes excuses or apologies for the things she does or the kind of person she is. She's well aware it's a parasitic kind of lifestyle and even calls it such herself. It's simply that she chose to live the way she does; she isn't going to show shame or regret for it by apologizing for the actions that her decision has led her to take. She also knows it's not an easy way to live. By attaching so completely to people, she understands that she needs to give as much as she takes--to keep things even in order to avoid being chased off for being too needy. That's where the sense of "even-ness" that led to her saving a teacher she hates came from. It's just a result of the way she's chosen to live her life. It's a life that she's fiercely protective of, and she will do whatever it takes to protect her peaceful way of life and the few friends that she manages to make. Anything.

Now, cool strong-willed nature and contentment with being who she is aside, Anri is a very shy person in most situations. She can't speak in front of her class without blushing and stammering a little. Compliments make her duck her head, flirting renders her incapable of interacting at all! It's not a front; she really is that bad at dealing with people in normal settings. Once someone manages to get her talking though, she's perfectly capable of holding conversation. It just might take a try or two for her to calm herself down enough to speak without a stammer or nervous pauses. And when spending time with her friends she's really a cheerful girl. She can smile easily with them and is at ease enough with good friends to go as far as teasing them, if a little awkwardly. She wouldn't have chosen to become a parasite to them if she couldn't get any enjoyment from their company after all~

And, although she's the owner of a cursed sword, and although she's entirely capable of using it masterfully, if she's not in some way protecting a friend or her way of living, she completely shuts down in unwanted or even violent situations. Her vision greys out and narrows, sound fades away, it is not a cool method of removing herself from the situation. It's a method of mental escape used by a socially awkward girl who just doesn't know what else to do. Without her protective side being triggered to push her into action, that nervous, shy girl is really all she is.

Memory Loss Considerations: Anri's choice to depend on people will definitely still be present. It's practically a necessity to depend on ones own team. You cannot expect to survive if you can't rely on your teammates, so she'll have zero problem in doing exactly that. She will still be somewhat shy around them to begin with, but given the nature of games and the atmosphere of needing to work together, she'll likely begin to open up to them easier than she normally would (pending how play goes). I'm also planning to start her with a memory that will still give her a warped view of love and violence so she'll still be prone to being shy and reserved (though not as severely so) since I think playing her otherwise would be incredibly strange.

Her unapologetic stance on being the way she is will still be present. But she won't consider herself a parasite since it's considered normal rely and live dependently on your teammates. Instead she'll transfer her calm acceptance of the type of person she is to the type of person she is in the games. :) No apologies if she has to shank some other team during them. Her team needs to survive somehow, and if they have to live unfairly then they'll live unfairly. She won't immediately resort to vicious or ruthless behavior though; she will still want to avoid negative repercussions for her team. It's similar way she wants to keep things even so she won't be chased off as a parasite in canon. Make people feel things are fair and she can continue with her peace, just in this case her peace is her team.

At first, uncomfortable or awkward situations will just confuse and/or alarm her rather than making her shutdown. Memories of her father's abuse aren't there to make her quite that introverted or prone to mental shutdowns. And neither is the memory of her parents' deaths. HOWEVER, as games and plot go on and terrible things happen, her tendency to try to shut down will begin to surface again. And without a weapon or knowledge in how to use a weapon she won't be able to handle violent situations well at all. Whether or not she wants to she'll be forced to depend on her team to handle fighting situations for the most part, though there may be exceptions if, say, she decides she needs to chuck a rock at enemy x to give a teammate an opening. She will still want to protect her team after all. 8) It's just an issue of how capable she'll actually be before she remembers how to fight.

Skills:

Anri has advanced/master level sword skills. She is definitely within a human range regarding these skills and has canonically been bested by other people before, so I don't believe the power cap will affect these. I'll just lock it in different levels of skills so she doesn't go from zero skill to amazeballs sword master with one skill. :|b Anri also has a demon sword within her body that she can draw out! I am planning to lock the ability to draw the sword until she earns that back in a skill game, but if it's preferred for her not to have it at all until she quests for it back I can work with that.

The sword, Saika, comes with an ability of its own. If it cuts a person, that person becomes "infected" with a lower-grade copy of it. This manifests as smaller blades (knives, daggers, etc), and these infected individuals can further infect others. Anri has the ability to exert control over any infected individuals by issuing commands, and if an infected individual spreads the infection they can issue commands to who they infect (but Anri remains the ultimate "voice" among them, so to speak.) I definitely think that people she cuts shouldn't be able to spread the infection themselves as a regular thing. Maybe for an event, but I absolutely would want to run that by mods before anything happened. I-It just seems like too much to give her the potential for such an extensive web of people to control. :'D [TBD!!!]That said I am unsure how to handle her ability to control people she cuts personally with Saika. Definitely needs to be OOC consent but that's a given, but I am just . . . unsure. :|a I don't want to remove it, but don't want to go crazy with it . . . Maybe only able to issue a single command a day? Possibly with room for characters to be able to resist a command if their players aren't comfortable with being forced to follow every order she might give out.[/TBD!!!]

Basically I am very open to mod suggestions or requests regarding how Saika is handled since it is a pretty big deal and I don't want it to become problematic in play, but I really do not want to permanently lose it since it has such a noteworthy effect on Anri's personality and characterization. She's just not the same character without it.

She also has some degree of natural intuition. When a truly horrifying mass murder simply touches her she has an internal freakout for the rest of the scene, telling herself that she must not forget this person's face because they are a threat. It's an ability that would only work with very strong and clear-cut personalities. ie: If she met Freddy Kreuger she could conceivably get some strong chills and such from him, likewise meeting someone like Honda Tohru she could feel naturally at ease. Weak or middling strength personalities won't have the effect at all.

Other basic skills are things like cooking, basic athletics, stealth, etc. All within the range of human ability.

WRITING SAMPLE

Option 3: Thread Links

Link 3-6 threads of you playing this character. If there is any information needed —like, this is an AU game, this is an amnesia game, character was under X effect—please include that information somewhere! We would like to see a variety of types threads (or threads off of different characters) if possible (so, no linking 6 threads of threading with the same canonmate, please!)

Livejournal thread from an intro post into Soul Campaign. In this game she became a weapon--literally could change into a katana--and lost all access to Saika. She was also teleported to a completely different version of Earth, hence her surprise at seeing Mikado and Kida. Bonus surprise at Kida due to him avoiding them at the canon point we pulled the trio from.

From the same intro threading with a Hughesss for a good example of how she can deal with a friendly stranger

Kida is pimping her out i mean no. As a weapon in that game, Anri needed to find a meister to wield her so she could fight in the war. So Kida held interviews to try to help her pick out someone that was trustworthy! This is a thread with Kida about that.

Another game! This is an intro from a very short-lived memory loss game. parasaika is Anri, and fontechnophile is Guy from Tales of the Abyss. Anri has Saika in this game and can hear the ravings, but is unable to withdraw her yet. Other than that it's a basic amnesia intro.

Another arbas thread deals_in_death is Anri's teammate (but I can't remember the character), and the other two are from an opposing team. They're trying to set up a trade since each team has a different kind of resource and trading with each other is required for survival. Some teams are just more paranoid than others. :') Also, Cinis are a team like knights or Ophiuchus.

I. I am sorry the icons and journals are all dead in the last two threads, but hopefully this works well enough. :'D I can try filling out a different option if you'd like to see more.
